A beautiful antique French stoneware oil jug with a wonderfully rustic, earthy character. This substantial jug features a rounded, hand-thrown body with subtle horizontal throwing lines, a warm natural stoneware color, and lovely traces of terracotta and brown firing throughout.
The distinctive raised handles frame the shoulders of the jug and give it an especially charming silhouette, while the simple narrow neck and small opening were traditionally suited to pouring and storing oil.
I especially love the variation in the glaze and firing marks—soft cream, ochre, warm brown, and hints of terracotta come together to create the beautifully aged surface that makes French country pottery so desirable.
