A wonderful antique French cast iron spittoon, or crachoir, with an unusually decorative form. This low, wide vessel features a softly weathered gray patina, a substantial raised rim, and an ornate scalloped base with beautifully molded feet.
Spittoons such as this were once commonplace in French cafés, wine cellars, restaurants, and homes, particularly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, they make wonderfully unexpected decorative pieces and can be styled as a low planter, catchall, wine-tasting vessel, or simply displayed as an architectural antique.
The aged surface is full of character, with areas of oxidation, wear, and variation in color that speak to its history and use. I especially love the decorative skirt around the base—it gives this piece a sculptural quality that you don't often see in these utilitarian objects.
Dimensions: 10.25 in x 1.75 in
Please note patina, wear, and one broken scallop
